Respectful Campus Policies
The University has two policies that regulate bullying behavior. Faculty Handbook C09 applies when faculty engage in bullying, and University Administrative Policy 2240 applies to staff. These are administrative processes that allow you to choose between seeking informal resolution and filing a formal complaint.
Allegations of bullying against a Staff member should be directed to the staff person’s supervisor, or reported via EthicsPoint, where it will be reviewed according to UAP 2200: Reporting Suspected Misconduct and Whistleblower Protection from Retaliation. Reports of bullying by students, volunteers, or visitors to UNM should be made to the Dean of Students’ Office or the LoboRespect Advocacy Center.
Key steps in a formal report of destructive behavior made against a Faculty member include:
- Written report must be submitted to the Supervisor of the offending staff faculty member within 60 days of offense
- Supervisor provides copy of report to offending staff or faculty member, who has 14 days to submit response (which must then be shared with the person making the complaint)
- Your conversations may not remain confidential, depending on how you identify the harms you have experienced;
- Supervisor reviews documents and interviews parties to the complaint, considers whether to recommend informal resolution and/or whether possible violation has occurred. If yes, Supervisor initiates an investigation into the alleged behavior.
- Findings of investigation are shared with both parties and may be appealed by either party
